Leader Media Productions was founded by Carlo Liconti in 1980. With its own facilities (a complete soundstage/studio), 35mm equipment including several cameras, editing equipment and a staff consisting of key crew members, full-time office personnel, and regular part-time freelancers, Leader Media became one of Canada’s leading commercial production houses. Over 250 commercials passed through the company before it ventured into the feature film realm.
Each year, Leader Media produced at least half a dozen documentaries, a dozen commercials and a few dramas. Leader Media and Liconti were enlisted to produce and direct various television series including two seasons of the “The Campbells” for the CTV National Network and a Golden Globe winning episode of “My Secret Identity” for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. It was in the mid 1980’s when Leader Media turned to expand into feature film and produced their first feature, “Concrete Angels”.
The film was invited to the prestigious Cine di Gijon Festival. The following year Leader Media produced “Dreams Beyond Memories” and followed that with the critically-acclaimed feature, “Brown Bread Sandwiches” starring Giancarlo Giannini and Kim Cattrall. Next was “Vita Cane” which was selected to premiere at the distinguished Montreal World Film Festival.
Leader Media was then instrumental in putting together the feature film “Foreign Bodies” which dealt with the prevalence of Asian prostitution rings in Canada. Leader Media has since been involved with a number of projects including myriad “The Making of…” short documentaries for such diverse films as the family picture “Salt Water Moose” and the action-adventure “Jungleground”.
Leader helmed “Dragons of Crime”, an investigative documentary shot in Hong Kong, China, and New York on the Asian underworld for A&E and the CBC, in 1994.Leader Media also produced a series of comedy specials entitled “Mondo Taboo” for the national Viewer’s Choice network. In 1998, Leader Media was the first company to work under the new Canadian-Italian treaty co-producing the movie-of-the-week “Greener Fields” shot in Vancouver and Rome.
Leader Media produced the feature film “Tangled” in partnership with Myriad Pictures of Los Angeles and the feature “Dead by Monday”, a Swiss-German co-production. Leader Media then went on to produce features such as Behind the Red Door in association with Blue Rider of Los Angeles, Phase IV an action thriller for international release, Say Nothing for HBO, and the highly successful Big Spender for Discovery Channel.
Recently Leader Media produced a home renovation television series pilot, “Where’s Sam?” a feature film entitled “Havana 57” and a treaty co-production with Italy, “Looking in Obituaries”. While “Rebels” an action series and “The Second Time Around” a feature about later love are in post production, preproduction is starting on two films: “Skin” and “Justice”.
